چکیده

In the leader election problem, n players wish to elect a random leader. The difficulty is that some coalition of players may conspire to elect one of its own members. We adopt the perfect information model: all communication is by broadcast, and the bad players have unlimited computational power. Protocols proceed in rounds: though players are synchronized between rounds, within each round the bad players may wait to see the inputs of the good players. A protocol is called resilient if a good leader is elected with probability bounded away from 0. We give a simple, constructive leader election protocol that is resilient against coalitions of size βn, for any β < 1/2. Our protocol takes log∗ n+O(1) rounds, each player sending at most logn bits per round. For any constant k, our protocol can be modified to take k rounds and offer resilience against coalitions of size n/(log n), where is a small enough constant and log denotes the logarithm iterated k times. This is constructive for k ≥ 3. The primary component of the above protocols is a new collective sampling protocol: for a set S of large enough (polynomial) size, this protocol generates an element s ∈ S in a single round so that for any subset T ⊂ S, Pr[s ∈ T ] ≤ |T | |S| for a constant α > 0.

Near Optimal Leader Election in Multi-Hop Radio Networks

We present distributed randomized leader election protocols for multi-hop radio networks that elect a leader in almost the same time TBC required for broadcasting a message. For the setting without collision detection, our algorithm runs with high probability in O(D log n D + log n) · min{log logn, log n D } rounds on any n-node network with diameter D. Since TBC = Θ(D log n D + log n) is a low...

Exploiting Spontaneous Transmissions for Broadcasting and Leader Election in Radio Networks

We study two fundamental communication primitives: broadcasting and leader election in the classical model of multi-hop radio networks with unknown topology and without collision detection mechanisms. It has been known for almost 20 years that in undirected networks with n nodes and diameterD, randomized broadcasting requiresΩ(D log n D +log n) rounds in expectation, assuming that uninformed no...

Sublinear Bounds for Randomized Leader Election

This paper concerns randomized leader election in synchronous distributed networks. A distributed leader election algorithm is presented for complete n-node networks that runs in O(1) rounds and (with high probability) uses only O( √ n log n) messages to elect a unique leader (with high probability). When considering the “explicit” variant of leader election where eventually every node knows th...

Deterministic Leader Election in O(D+\log n) Time with Messages of Size O(1)

This paper presents a distributed algorithm, called ST T , for electing deterministically a leader in an arbitrary network, assuming processors have unique identifiers of size O(log n), where n is the number of processors. It elects a leader in O(D + log n) rounds, where D is the diameter of the network, with messages of size O(1). Thus it has a bit round complexity of O(D + log n). This substa...

Compression of View on Anonymous Networks

View is a labeled directed graph containing all information about the network that a party can learn by exchanging messages with its neighbors. View can be used to solve distributed problems on an anonymous network (i.e., a network that does not guarantee that every party has a unique identifier). This paper presents an algorithm that constructs views in a compressed form on an anonymous n-part...
